چکیده

Face detection evaluation generally involves three steps: block generation, face classification, and post-processing. However, firstly, face detection performance is largely influenced by block generation and postprocessing, concealing the performance of face classification core module. Secondly, implementing and optimizing all the three steps results in a very heavy work, which is a big barrier for researchers who only cares about classification. Motivated by this, we conduct a specialized benchmark study in this paper, which focuses purely on face classification. We start with face proposals, and build a benchmark dataset with about 3.5 million patches for two-class face/non-face classification. Results with several baseline algorithms show that, without the help of post-processing, the performance of face classification itself is still not very satisfactory, even with a powerful CNN method. We’ll release this benchmark to help assess performance of face classification only, and ease the participation of other related researchers.

Generic Image Classification Approaches Excel on Face Recognition

The main finding of this work is that the standard image classification pipeline, which consists of dictionary learning, feature encoding, spatial pyramid pooling and linear classification, outperforms all state-of-the-art face recognition methods on the tested benchmark datasets (we have tested on AR, Extended Yale B, the challenging FERET, and LFW-a datasets). This surprising and prominent re...

Face Classification via Sparse Approximation

We address the problem of 2D face classification under adverse conditions. Faces are difficult to recognize since they are highly variable due to such factors as illumination, expression, pose, occlusion and resolution. We investigate the potential of a method where the face recognition problem is cast as a sparse approximation. The sparse approximation provides a significant amount of robustne...

Virtual face image generation for illumination and pose insensitive face recognition

Face recognition has attracted much attention in the past decades for its wide potential applications. Much progress has been made in the past few years. However, specialized evaluation of the state-of-the-art of both academic algorithms and commercial systems illustrates that the performance of most current recognition technologies degrades significantly due to the variations of illumination a...

A Study of Crossover Operators for Gene Selection of Microarray Data

Classification of microarray data requires the selection of a subset of relevant genes in order to achieve good classification performance. Several genetic algorithms have been devised to perform this search task. In this paper, we carry out a study on the role of crossover operator and in particular investigate the usefulness of a highly specialized crossover operator called GeSeX (GEne SElect...
